Minimum Memory for Equivalence between Ex Ante Optimality and Time-Consistency

چکیده

We give a necessary and sufficient condition on memory of a player in an extensive game for equivalence between ex ante optimality and timeconsistency (for all payoff assignments). The condition is called A-loss recall and requires that each loss of a player’s memory can be traced back to some loss of memory of his own action. A-loss recall is also shown to be a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a timeconsistent strategy (for all payoff assignments) if the player is consciousminded. An ex ante control chart for project monitoring using earned duration management observations

In the past few years, there has been an increasing interest in developing project control systems. The primary purpose of such systems is to indicate whether the actual performance is consistent with the baseline and to produce a signal in the case of non-compliance. Recently, researchers have shown an increased interest in monitoring project’s performance indicators, by plotting them on the S...

Gender Power, Fertility, and Family Policy

The birth of children often shifts the power balance within a family. If family decisions are made according to the spouses' welfare function, this shift in power may lead to a time consistency problem. The allocation of resources after the birth of children may differ from the ex-ante optimal choice. In a model of cooperative decision making within a family, we show that this time consistency ...

Moving Endpoints and the Internal Consistency of Agents' Ex Ante Forecasts

Forecasts by rational agents contain embedded initial and terminal boundary conditions. Standard time series models generate two types of long-run “endpoints”—fixed endpoints and moving average endpoints. Neither can explain the shifting endpoints implied by postwar movements in the cross-section of forward rate forecasts in the term structure or by post-1979 changes in survey estimates of expe...

Ex Ante Preparedness vs. Ex Post Response to Animal Disease Introductions: Better Safe than Sorry?

This article examines a tradeoff between ex ante preparedness costs and ex post costs of response to a potential introduction of an infectious animal disease. In a simplified case study setting we examine the conditions for optimality of enhanced detection system considering various characteristics of a potential infectious cattle disease outbreak, costs of program implementation, severity of t...

Minimum distance requirements and liability: implications for co-existence

The co-existence of conventional and transgenic products in the food chain introduces new elements in the evaluation of the profitability of transgenic crops and, consequently, on the farmer’s adoption decision. In particular, one emerging problem farmers are facing in Europe is related to the legal liability of transgenic-crop cultivation. In Europe, a mixture of ex-ante regulations and ex-pos...
